Display 0 as dash(-) in excel upon export

I'm desperately trying to export to excel but display 0 values as dashes(-).

M$ Excel has a custom pattern for this and it looks like: _(*#,##0_);_(*(#,##0);_(* "-"_);_(@_)

This pattern naturally does not comply with Java's DecimalFormat.

I've failed in every way to make jasper reports pass this pattern over to excel for cell formatting.

Any ideas on how I could do this?

Did you try JRXlsAbstractExporterParameter.FORMAT_PATTERNS_MAP?  Which of the Excel exporters are you using?
