Another 'columns in subreport' problem

First post here - so please be patient and let me know if I do something naughty...
I am using iReport 2.0.5.

I have a subreport with 6 columns. The subreport can have null one or more entries per column. There is a group which starts on a new col.

If I run that subreport standalone (with default data) the columns are filled as expected.
If I run that subreport in a main report (still using default data here for demonstration) the cols with more than one value are generating a column brake - so that a second value appeares in the next column. This behaviour is the same with parameters passed from the main report.

I attached two pdf's - subreport and mainreport. Look at col 2 in the subreport. Motion Capture 2.S and Motion Capture 1.A are supposed to be in the same col. They show up in two cols if I run it embedded.
I tried all sorts of resizeing and strech parameters with no result.

I am sure that is just me not pressing the right button or so... can someone help?

THX in advance!
