How to conditionally show and hide columns?

I have several very similar reports that I am currently trying to combine into a single report. They mostly only vary by their grouping, but I have a parameter that allows the user to select how to group the data in the report. The only other difference is that some columns are present for some of the reports and not for others. I am looking for a way to conditionally show/hide these columns based on the grouping parameter, without creating a giant white space when the column is hidden (I guess this means the shown column widths would have to be dynamic based on how many columns there are). Any help is appreciated, and it is also helpful to know if you think this is not possible.
